Results from the 2006 WIKF

British National Championships

Over 200 competitors representing 11 clubs from all over England, Northern Ireland and Wales took part in the annual prestigious W.I.K.F British National Championships in Cheshunt on the 23rd April 2006.

The Championships, which have been running for over 16 years, included full categories for Kata, Kumite and Team events.  Spectators packed out the stands and were delighted and entertained by the level of Kata and Kumite performances throughout the day.

This year’s Championships attracted the best competitors in the country with former and current All Styles English and British National Champions, European and World Champions, current W.I.K.F England National team members and many Southern Region and England All Styles squad members.  As part of the selection process for the 2006 European Championships is based on results from this event, it meant that the overall standards and performances of the athletes were very high.

Professor Tatsuo Suzuki 8th Dan Hanshi (Ph. d), was as usual watching the days events from the head table enjoying many of the Kata performances and Kumite bouts.  Competitors were honoured to have Professor Suzuki hand out the trophies and medals to the winning competitors and to give the Championship trophy to the KEN-BU-KAN school for accumulating the highest number of medals and points on the day.  SU-HA-RI were in 2ND place with UKKW in 3RD.

Professor Suzuki awarded Alex Little from KEN-BU-KAN the trophy for the best Competitor of the Championships, after picking up 3 Gold medals, winning his Individual Kata and Kumite event as well as the helping his team to victory in the Boys 15-17 years Team Kumite event.

I would like to thank all the competitors, spectators, officials and coaches who supported this year’s Championships and I look forward to seeing you all again next year.  Finally, on behalf of the W.I.K.F England coaching team, I would like to wish good luck to the members of the England Team during the rest of the competition season and at the forthcoming European Championships which are going to be in Holland, on the 7th and 8th of October.

Many thanks

Andy Michaelides
