Numbers

O.K. before we start looking at numbers and counting in Japanese there are a few things you need to understand. Firstly there are two different numerical systems used, one of which are Chinese origin numbers, the other is the native Japanese numbers.

Below you will see the Japanese names for common numbers. It is quite easy to count using this method once you have learnt numbers 1 to 10. You can hear to pronunciation by clicking on the hyper-linked number. Be careful when using these numbers because if you are counting objects, for example I bought two books you must attach a counter to the number.

As for things which are not clearly categorised or which are shapeless (stones, boxes, stars, idea, problem etc.), the native Japanese numbers are used which is limited from 1 to 10.
